How to Collect Signatures on a Google Form
Google Forms does not include a native signature field. You can collect a typed name with an acknowledgment checkbox, ask respondents to upload a signature image, use a third-party add-on, or switch to a form builder with built-in signature capture and e-signature workflows. For contracts and other important documents, a dedicated e-signature workflow provides much stronger evidence.
Workaround 1: Typed signature with acknowledgment
- Add a short answer question titled “Type your full legal name as your signature.”
- Add a checkbox question: “I agree that typing my name above is my electronic signature.”
- Make both required.
- Enable Collect email addresses in settings for an extra identity signal.
Pros: simple and free. Cons: limited evidence, no signed document and no audit trail beyond response timestamps.
Workaround 2: Upload a signature image
- Add a file upload question asking for a photo or scan of the signature.
- Respondents must sign in with a Google account to upload files.
Pros: captures a handwritten signature. Cons: clunky for respondents, requires Google sign-in and does not attach the signature to a formatted document.
Workaround 3: Add-ons and scripts
Some Google Workspace Marketplace add-ons and Apps Script projects add signature capture or merge responses into a Google Docs template and send it for signing.
Pros: keeps Google Forms as the front end. Cons: depends on third-party add-ons, requires permissions review and may have limits or costs.
Workaround 4: Use Google Workspace eSignature
Google has added eSignature features to Google Docs and Drive for eligible Workspace plans. This works for sending documents for signature, but it is separate from Google Forms. Check whether your Workspace edition includes it.
Comparison
| Approach | Legally robust evidence | Signed document | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typed name + checkbox | Basic | No | Low |
| Signature image upload | Basic | No | Medium |
| Add-on | Varies | Sometimes | Medium |
| Google Docs eSignature | Good | Yes, separate from Forms | Medium |
| Form builder with e-signature | Strong | Yes | Low |
When to switch from Google Forms
Switch to a form builder with e-signature when:
- You need a signed, formatted document such as a contract or waiver.
- You need multiple signers or signing order.
- You need a detailed audit trail.
- Data should flow automatically into your CRM, HRIS or ERP.
- Respondents should not need a Google account.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you add a signature to a Google Form?
Google Forms does not have a native signature field. Common workarounds are a typed name with an acknowledgment checkbox, a signature image upload or a third-party add-on. For legally robust signatures, use a form builder with built-in e-signature.
Is a typed name on a Google Form a legal signature?
A typed name can count as an electronic signature in the US under the ESIGN Act and UETA if the person intends to sign. However, evidence is limited. For important agreements, use an e-signature tool that records a detailed audit trail and produces a signed document.
Does Google have e-signature?
Google has introduced eSignature features in Google Docs and Google Drive for eligible Google Workspace plans. These let you request signatures on documents. They are separate from Google Forms, and availability depends on your Workspace edition.
What is the best Google Forms alternative with signatures?
Form builders such as Jotform, Formstack, Cognito Forms, Fillout and Noca support signature capture. Noca can also generate a formatted document from the answers, send it for e-signature and update your CRM or ERP automatically.
Can I send Google Form responses for signature?
Yes, with additional tools. Add-ons or automation platforms can merge responses into a document template and send it for e-signature. Noca can connect to Google Forms and run the document generation and signature steps automatically.
Do respondents need a Google account to sign?
For file upload questions in Google Forms, respondents must sign in to Google. Typed signatures do not require sign-in unless you restrict the form. Dedicated e-signature tools let signers sign from an email link without any account.
